Last Week’s Shoot – Hull Pot

Waterfall at Hull Pot and Pen Y Ghent

I’m now just about up to date on my image processing, so here’s another “Last Week’s Shoot” post on a visit to Hull Pot below the slopes of Pen-Y-Ghent in Ribblesdale (actually the week before last, but near enough!).

From Horton-in-Ribblesdale station I walked down into the village and picked up the Pennine Way, following Horton Scar Lane toward Horton Moor in the shadow of Pen-Y-Ghent, one of Yorkshire’s Three Peaks.

The lane reaches a crossroads with the Pennine Way continuing up toward Pen-Y-Ghent, but following the minor path straight on leads to Hull Pot.

I had been to this location once before to photograph Hull Pot with Pen-Y-Ghent in the distance but the water level in Hull Pot Beck had been lower and there was no main waterfall falling over the lip of the limestone cliff into the pot, so after the recent very heavy rain for a few days I decided to go back for another look, hoping to find the waterfall in flow.  I wasn’t disappointed!

After taking just a few shots the clouds thickened and the rain started once more.  I had my lunch sheltering behind some rocks and started to make my way back down the lane as the rain didn’t look like stopping, but after a few minutes a break appeared and the light was perfect for waterfall photography, so I had to rush back to get some more shots!

Having exhausted the subject, I finally made my way back down Horton Scar Lane, admiring what was left of the autumn colour in Ribblesdale on the way back down to Horton.

  1. Smashing account of your trip to the Dales and Hull Pot. I have been passed this place many a time on foot and on bike but never with my camera, you have inspired me to return sometime soon. I think it would make a great photo in the snow too. Brilliant shots by the way.
