I’ve been meaning to have a trip to Castle Hill for a while so on a rare (so far at least) sunny spring day last week I took the train over to Berry Brow station (a couple of stops down the Penistone Line from Huddersfield) and took the steep slog up the hill – it’s easy enough to find with the Victoria Tower visible on the horizon from the railway line.  If you don’t fancy the climb, there are buses from Huddersfield that take you a bit closer – and there’s a car park right next to the tower at the top for the lazy ones.

It’s worth the walk up though – the views are spectacular!  As it’s the Easter holidays the tower was open daily and you can climb to the top for a higher viewpoint if you wish (adults £1.95) but it’s just as good a view if you walk all the way around the perimeter of the hilltop (originally an iron age fort and home to a medieval settlement – the tower was added to celebrate Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee and opened in 1899).

Even the view toward the Emley Moor TV mast looked great – and it was nice to see where my TV signal comes from!

The view of the tower itself was nice too, but the plain blue sky was a bit, well, plain!  The odd fluffy white cloud scudded past to add a bit of interest though…

Having introduced myself to the subject I now can’t wait to get back – a more interesting sky and a sunset shoot should be in order sometime!
