Last Week’s Shoot – Dundee at Dusk

I’m just back from what seems to have become an annual winter trip to St Andrews in Fife, so have got plenty of processing to catch up on.  For my dusk shoot on the day I arrived I left the Kingdom of Fife and crossed the River Tay to Dundee.

The main subject I had in mind for dusk was the McManus Art Gallery and Museum, a lovely George Gilbert Scott Gothic Revival building in the centre of town, so I headed here first to get a few shots in the setting sun.

There are a few fun bronze statues of DC Thomson comic characters around the city centre – I’d seen Desperate Dan and Minnie the Minx on previous visits, but a new one of Oor Wullie had appeared on a low wall near the McManus since my last look round.

The cheeky chap has scribbled a poem Tae Rabbie Burns on the wall next to him, which was quite amusing – especially as it just happened to be Burns Night that very evening!

I had a bit of time to wander round to find a few more subjects for dusk and had a walk back down to City Square where the lights were starting to come on on Caird Hall.  The fountains in front of the City Chambers looked good too.

Back at the McManus  the building looked splendid as the floodlights came on and the sky darkened.  As it was Burns Night I made sure I got some shots with the statue of the man himself in the foreground!

Having photographed the McManus from all angles, I returned to the fountains in City Square and the view along Reform Street to the floodlit Dundee High School building.

I finished off the shoot with a few more shots of Caird Hall as the lights changed colour from warm reds to cool greens and blues.
