A Walk Around Dentdale

I’m still catching up on the processing from July, so here are a few images from the walk around the upper part of Dentdale in the middle of the month.

The Coal Road Leading Down Into Dentdale Yorkshire Dales Cumbria England

I’d gone mainly with getting some shots of the Artengill and Dent Head viaducts in mind and thought they’d look best from the hillside above in the morning, so from the station I headed up the Coal Road and eventually joined the Pennine Bridleway which skirts the edge of Great Knoutberry Hill.

After the steady climb up the Coal Road it was lovely just to follow the contour around the hill with great views down into Dentdale below and ahead with Ingleborough in the distance.

A hardy Swaledale sheep was standing at the side of the path admiring the view over Dentdale too!

Rounding the hill and starting to drop down into Arten Gill, the Artengill Viaduct came into view below.  I was glad I’d climbed all the way up as the fields rising up the slopes behind it looked glorious.

After Arten Gill I continued along the Pennine Bridleway across farmland and eventually picked up the lane leading back down the hill to the Dent Head viaduct.

The return walk along the road next to the river was very pleasant and, when I sat on a bench to have a drink of water from my bottle a few local hens came over and joined me!  I think they were after my sandwiches, but unfortunately I’d already eaten them…

At Cowgill and the junction where the Coal Road leads back up the hill to the station the old signpost reminded me that, though Dentdale is now in Cumbria (but still within the Yorkshire Dales) it used to be part of the old West Riding of Yorkshire.

The walk back up the hill to Dent Station was warm work in the late afternoon sun – the sheep had a better idea having a rest in the shade of a barn.

Eventually I got back to the station – it certainly felt like I’d climbed the 1150ft above sea level to get there!  Fortunately I could admire the fine views across the dale whilst waiting for my train!
