The reverse of the card has a classic postcard layout with an image caption across the top and address lines on the right hand side. There is also a barcode for the postcard range. The postcards are within Royal Mail’s standard letter size for posting.
About the location
The Victorian gatehouse building dates from 1854, though a workhouse had stood on Allhallowgate in Ripon since 1776. Along with the main block behind it it is now part of the Ripon Workhouse Museum, one of three museums in the city run by Ripon Museums. (The others being The Courthouse Museum and The Prison & Police Museum). The museum retains a grim atmosphere to give convey a sense of what life was like in a Victorian workhouse. Despite the austere history, the red brick building looks quite inviting in the sunshine on our Ripon Workhouse Museum postcard!
