About the location
Our Ripon Market Place postcard depicts a well-known Ripon landmark! Dating back to 1702, the obelisk in the centre of Ripon Marketplace is the earliest surviving free-standing obelisk in Great Britain. It was commissioned by John Aislabie of Studley Royal, with modifications by William Aislabie in 1781. The obelisk is 80 feet high and surmounted by a weather vane representing the Ripon Wakeman’s horn.
