About the location
Dating back to 1702, the obelisk in the centre of Ripon Marketplace is the earliest surviving free-standing obelisk in Great Britain. It was commissioned by John Aislabie of Studley Royal, with modifications by William Aislabie in 1781. The obelisk is 80 feet high and surmounted by a weather vane representing the Ripon Wakeman’s horn. It our Ripon Market Place greetings card the obelisk is viewed from the corner of the market place with a summery flower display in the foreground.
